About us
Hello, we are the proud owners of Horta do Baldio, a beautiful farm in the Alto Alentejo! We bought the property in October 2024, because this is the area in Portugal we love the most. It’s quite the change from the busy city life we had in the Netherlands. Isn’t it great to be surrounded by thousands of olive trees instead of thousands of cars? We absolutely think so!
We have never been farmers in our life, so this will be an interesting journey. With almost 6 acres to care for, we have a lot to learn and do. Luckily we have the help of our neighbour and his 38 sheep. Together they will keep the land cleaned up and fertile. In the meantime we will have to work on the vegetable garden, fruit trees, flowers and chicken coop.
The farm house is way too big for us. So we are hoping to rent our second floor to visitors who want to enjoy the region and our farm. There is space for four people.
Where we are
Horta do Baldio is located just outside the city of Portalegre. This city is the capital of the district, which is also called Portalegre. It is the smallest district capital of Portugal, with less than 15.000 inhabitants.
Portalegre lies on the dividing line between the mountainous Serra de São Mamede and the flat plains of the Alentejo. Our land is relatively plane, but we have a great view of the city that goes up the mountain 400 to 600 metres.
